Songs of the Dighty

The Dighty Burn has inspired songs over the years.  If you know of one we can add to this page please get in touch.

There is an upcoming song project which aims to give life to old songs and inspire new songs about the Burn.  If you want to get involved please get in contact.

Introductory classes to songwriting are also being held at the Finmill Centre from January to March - click on the poster below.

The Braw, Braw Lads 0’ Dichty Water by James Simpson

We’ll sing in praise o Dichty’s Braes,

An her braw sons – ye’ll ne’er get better;

They’ve ta’en their guns tae chase the Huns,

The braw, braw lads o’ Dichty Water.

Braw, braw lads.

Some wear the kilt, some wear the trews,

But for the dress it disna matter;

I hope an trust we’ll hear guid news,

Frae the braw, braw lads o’ Dichty Water.

Braw, braw lads.

They’ve left the reels, the bundling stools,

The boomyaird, an the plashmill clatter;

An aff did go tae chase the foe,

The braw, braw lads o’ Dichty Water.

Braw, braw lads.

O let us pray that come it may,

The German loons they’ll quickly scatter;

An then come hame wi honour’d name,

The braw, braw lads o’ Dichty Water.

Braw, braw lads.

Their wives and sweethearts anxious waitin,

Aye cheered up wi every letter;

Wi Rattray’s band they’ll march sae grand

When welcomed back tae Dichty Water.

Braw, braw lads.
